DNA Testing

Dr John Flynn
Weatherbys DNA Testing
Weatherbys Laboratory at the Irish Equine Centre has been involved in animal parentage testing since 1985.
It is the only such laboratory in Ireland recognised by the International Society of Animal Genetics to have achieved the necessary standards in multi species animal parentage testing.
The laboratory utilises the very latest in DNA technology to provide an inviolable record of an animals identity.  It fulfils a central role in the registration of all thoroughbred foals, sport horses and Connemara ponies.
Vital role
Working closely with Cattle Breed societies, Artificial Insemination stations, the Department of Agriculture and Food and the Irish Coursing Club, the laboratory also plays a vital role in supporting the bovine, ovine and canine breeding industries.
The highly qualified team of scientists and technicians at Johnstown have been active participants over many years in international collaborative genome studies in equine and bovine populations.
DNA profiling
They have created DNA profiling programmes which enable full traceability of all livestock and meat products through paternal parentage testing.
The core function of the DNA testing laboratory is to provide a scientific facility to maintain the integrity, through clear identity tracing, of animal breeding as part of the Irish agricultural sector.
